How much does social media management cost?

Social media management costs US$500 to US$5,000 a month with a freelancer or an agency.12 A full-time hire earns US$62,500 to US$95,500 a year before benefits.7

  • Surveyed retainer: US$2,107 a month on average1
  • Most agencies: 49% charge US$1,000–2,499 a month2
  • In-house, with benefits: about US$114,300 a year11

We read 19 sources on 30/10/2026: two seller surveys, Clutch’s verified reviews, salary data and each tool’s own price page, in US dollars as published. Most sell something connected to the answer, and Sources says which.

Social media management cost, by who does it

Freelancers and agencies mostly sell a monthly retainer. An in-house hire is a salary, plus everything an employer pays on top.

  • One price model: 72% of agencies use a single method, usually the retainer.1
  • Experience counts: it moves the hourly rate more than the monthly fee.1
  • Benefits on top: 30% of what private employers pay per hour worked.9
The detail

In HeyOrca’s 2024 survey, 72% of agencies used a single pricing method, usually the retainer. 48% of freelancers offered more than one.1

Its benchmark retainer covers LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook for one business. That is 3 approved posts per platform each week, 5–10 hours of community management and in-depth reporting.1

The surveyed retainers sit close together, whoever sells them. Clutch’s average is higher because its reviews cover bigger agency projects.1,3

The in-house figure is a whole person’s time, every working day. At the US$80,000 midpoint it is more than four times the average surveyed retainer.1,7,11

Why prices run from US$100 to US$20,000

Published ranges price different jobs, and most come from firms selling one. Scope sets the fee.

  • Scope first: 93% of surveyed sellers name scope of work as what sets the fee.1
  • Then platforms: 68% name the number of platforms.1
  • The arithmetic: 20 hours at US$100 an hour is a US$2,000 floor.16
The detail

SocialPilot sells scheduling software. It gives US$100 to US$4,000 a month in one place, and its own parts add up to US$1,230–7,800 in another.13

WebFX, an agency whose own plan starts at US$3,150 a month, gives US$500 to US$5,000.12 Contra’s guide is written by a freelancer selling on Contra.14 Read all three as price lists, not market data.

In HeyOrca’s 2026 survey, agencies named time and resources (66%), the amount of content (60%) and the services included (57%).2

Sked Social, another software seller, shows a worked example rather than data: 20 hours a month at US$100 an hour, before tools and profit.16

How much do social media managers charge per hour?

  • Ask for the hours: a low rate is not a cheap month if more hours go in.
The detail

HeyOrca’s survey average was US$66.96 an hour. Freelancers ran from US$46.71 to US$92.23, and agencies from US$50.00 to US$85.33.1

Twine, a freelance marketplace, publishes US$25–40 for entry level, US$40–85 mid-level and US$85–150+ senior.15 In WebFX’s survey table, half of freelancers charged US$21–50 an hour.12

Clutch’s reviewed agencies run from under US$25 an hour in the lowest-priced markets to US$100–149 in the highest. Its usual agency rate is US$25–49.3

What an in-house social media manager costs

Salary runs US$62,500 to US$95,500 a year. With benefits, the US$80,000 midpoint costs about US$114,300.

  • Benefits add 30%: wages are 70% of what private employers pay per hour.9
  • No BLS category: the closest, PR specialists, includes social media programs.10
  • What it buys: a person inside the business every working day.
  • What it risks: one person carrying strategy, content, replies and reports.
The detail

Robert Half’s range is built from the pay of people it has placed. Its midpoint is US$80,000.7 Payscale’s 2,285 self-reported profiles mostly fall between US$41,000 and US$88,000.8

In the BLS employer cost survey for June 2026, wages were 70% of private employers’ cost per hour and benefits 30%.9 BELAY applies that to the midpoint: about US$114,300 a year.11

That is about US$9,525 a month, before software, a laptop, training and the ads. BELAY sells social media managers, so it has an interest; the arithmetic holds anyway.11

What is included, and what costs extra

Most packages cover content, scheduling and strategy. Ads, tools and production usually sit outside the fee.

  • Running the ads: US$650–6,000 a month at WebFX; 10–20% of ad spend at Contra.12,14
  • Tool costs: Buffer is free for 3 channels; Hootsuite starts at US$99 per user.17,19
  • Content production: WebFX lists US$40–150 a post.12
The detail

Later runs US$18.75 to US$82.50 a month, and Hootsuite reaches US$399, all billed yearly.18,19 Ask whether the manager’s tools are in the fee or passed on.

Contra puts a bundle of 10 to 20 posts at US$750–2,500.14 Video is where the work is heading: 49% of marketers call it their most important content type, and 70% plan to use more.6

Our own Instagram plan is four posts a week, and nearly all the work happens before anything is posted.20 That is where a retainer’s hours go, so a quote listing only “posts” tells you little.

Replies are the line most often thin in a cheap package. About three-quarters of consumers expect an answer within a day, and 73% will buy from a competitor if a brand stays silent.5

06

What to ask before hiring a social media manager

Ask what each month delivers, who replies, who owns the accounts and how the work is judged.

  • The monthly list: posts per platform, videos, stories and rounds of changes.
  • Who replies: to comments and messages, in which hours, and how soon.
  • Where ads sit: ad spend inside the fee or on top; management flat or a percentage.
  • Who owns the accounts: every profile and the ad account in the business’s name.
  • The minimum term: Clutch’s reviewed projects typically run 12 months; ask the notice period.3
The detail

Ask who makes the content: templates, stock images, AI, or photos and video of your actual business. Ask which tools are used, and who pays for them.

Ask what the monthly report shows. Reach and followers are easy to report; enquiries and sales are what pay for the work.

Ask who will actually do the work: the person who sold it, a junior, or a subcontractor. A good manager answers all of this in writing before you sign.

What I’d do

  1. I’d decide what the job is before comparing prices.
  2. Posts made and published? A freelancer on a clear monthly list is often enough.
  3. Strategy, content, replies and reports across platforms? That’s a team’s time; get the hours in writing.
  4. I wouldn’t sign without the monthly list, who replies, and where ad spend sits.
  5. Keep every account in the business’s name, and judge the work on enquiries and sales, not followers.

Questions people ask next

Does social media management include paid ads?

Usually not: only 18% of agencies include paid social in a typical package.2 Ad spend goes to the platform, and running the ads is often a separate fee.11,12 Ask for the two numbers separately.

How many posts should I get for the money?

There is no standard, so the list belongs in the quote. HeyOrca’s benchmark is 3 approved posts per platform each week on three platforms, plus replies and reporting, for an average US$2,107 a month.1

Is a monthly retainer better than paying by the hour?

For ongoing work a retainer is easier to budget, and 72% of agencies sell one way, usually the retainer.1 Hourly suits a one-off job. Either way, ask how many hours the fee buys.

Can I run social media myself with a scheduling tool?

Yes, and the tool is the cheap part: Buffer is free for 3 channels and Later starts at US$18.75 a month.17,18 The tool won’t make content or answer people, and 73% of consumers buy elsewhere when a brand doesn’t reply.5

Why are some social media managers so cheap?

Mostly location and scope. Clutch’s agencies run from under US$25 an hour to US$100–149.3 A low price can be fair for posting only; compare the monthly list of work, not the headline price.
