Why isn’t my business showing on Google Maps?
Your business usually isn’t showing on Google Maps because the profile is unverified, ineligible or suspended, or ranked below others.1,3,9
- Verification first: only verified businesses show on Maps and Search.1
- Google’s waits: edits up to 3 days; new-business rankings up to a month.1
- No paid shortcut: Google says no one can pay for a better local ranking.8
On 30/10/2026 we read the Google results for the question and 21 outside sources, led by Google’s own help pages and policies. Whitespark, BrightLocal, rankings.io and Sterling Sky sell local search services, and Sources says so.
01
Not showing on Google Maps: missing or not ranking?
Search your exact business name in a private window. If the profile appears, it exists and just isn’t ranking for that search.
| What you see | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Nothing for your name | Not verified yet |
| Google won’t verify it | Not eligible |
| The profile has vanished | A suspension |
| No map pin | Address hidden, as asked |
| Shows only near you | Distance from the searcher |
- The name test: search signed out, so Google doesn’t show you your own profile.
- Recent edits: Google says edits can take up to 3 days to appear.1
- New businesses: rankings can take up to a month to appear, in Google’s words.1
The detail
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A recent edit missing | Processing time | Up to 3 days |
| Pin misplaced | The map marker | Move the pin |
| Name only, not service | Relevance | Most specific category |
| Reviews gone, warning shown | Fake-engagement restriction | Stop any incentive |
From the outside, two different problems look the same. Search the exact business name in a private window, signed out of the account that manages the profile.
If the profile appears, it exists and is public. It just isn’t ranking for the searches you tried, such as your service and your area.
If nothing appears even for the exact name, the problem is the profile itself. It is unverified, unpublished, suspended or never eligible.
Give it time before calling it broken. Google says edits “can take up to 3 days to appear”.1 It also says “Rankings for new businesses can take up to a month to appear in search results.”1
02
Is your Google Business Profile verified yet?
Verification is the gate. Google says only verified businesses can show their business info on Maps and Search.
- Google picks the method: phone, text, email, video call, recorded video or postcard.2
- Sometimes two: some businesses must pass more than one method.2
- Finish it first: a verification step left in the manager comes before any other edit.
The detail
Verification is Google checking that you are the business. In Google’s words: “Only verified businesses can show their business info on Maps and Search.”1
Google decides which methods each business can use, and some need more than one.2 The options are a phone call or text, an email, a live video call, a recorded video or a postcard.
Verification reviews take up to 5 business days, and rare cases take longer.2 Most postcard codes arrive by day 14, and codes expire after 30 days.
03
Is your business eligible for a profile at all?
A business must meet customers in person during its stated hours. Either customers come to you, or you go to them.
- Online-only: brands, organisations, artists and other online-only businesses don’t qualify.3
- Lead generators: lead generation agents and companies are ineligible.3
- Property listings: rental or for-sale properties, such as vacant apartments, are out.3
- Borrowed venues: a class held somewhere you don’t own or represent is out.3
- Mailbox addresses: a P.O. box, remote mailbox or rented mailing address won’t pass.3,4
The detail
Google’s rule is short: “To qualify for a Business Profile, a business must make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours.”3
Its list of ineligible businesses names “Brands, organizations, artists, and other online-only businesses”.3 A rented mailing address the business doesn’t operate from isn’t eligible either.4
If the business really works only online, Google Maps is the wrong place to be found. The effort belongs on the website and in ordinary search results.
04
Has your Google profile been suspended?
Google suspends profiles that break its guidelines, and hides them until the issue is resolved. Check the managing account’s inbox first.
- Appeal once: Google says appeals can only be submitted once, so send your strongest case.9
- Matching documents: registration, licences, tax certificates or utility bills that match the profile.9
- Account first: if the Google account is restricted, appeal that before the profile.9
- Never start again: Google says don’t create a new profile for the same business.9
The detail
Google says “We may suspend or disable Business Profiles that don’t follow our guidelines.”9 A suspended profile won’t show to other users until the issue is resolved.1
Google notifies the account that manages the profile.1 Appeal through Google’s appeals tool, signed in to that account.9
Real businesses get caught too. In May 2026, Search Engine Roundtable reported suspensions after owners’ Google accounts were restricted.19 Local search specialists were “unclear if this is a bug or some other issue”.
Nobody controls how long an appeal takes. Mike Blumenthal, a Product Expert on Google’s help forum, saw appeals stretch from about five days to nearly five weeks.18
05
Why service-area businesses show no pin on the map
Google asks businesses that don’t receive customers to hide their address. No address means no street pin.
- Up to 20 areas: set by city, postcode or region.5
- About 2 hours: the whole area shouldn’t pass about 2 hours’ drive from base.5
- A possible cost: experts rank a visible address seventh of all Maps factors.14
- One small test: a hidden address came with lower rankings and calls for one client.17
- Rules come first: never show an address customers can’t visit.4
The detail
Google’s instruction: “If you don’t serve customers at your business address, remove your address from your Business Profile.”5 A missing pin can be the profile working as designed.
Distance still counts in the ranking. Google measures how far each business is from the person searching.8
Whitespark’s experts rank “address showing” seventh of all Maps factors.14 In a Sterling Sky field test, one client’s rankings and calls fell while the address was hidden.17 They recovered once it was restored, on a sample of one client.
That is not a reason to show an address customers can’t visit. Breaking Google’s guidelines is the route to a suspension.
06
How Google decides who shows on Google Maps
Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. It says no one can request or pay for a better ranking.
| Factor | Score |
|---|---|
| Primary category | 227 |
| Distance to the searcher | 225 |
| Keywords in the name | 223 |
| Address in city searched | 213 |
| Open at search time | 189 |
- Be specific: Google’s example is “Nail salon”, not “Salon”.6
- Check it anyway: Google replaced the primary category on our own profile.23
- Distance is strong: about 56% of firms in one study ranked first at their own location.16
- The first mile: firms dropped about 8 places on average.16
- Names stay real: keywords in the name breach Google’s rules unless they are the name.4
The detail
Relevance is “how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for”. Distance is “how far each business is from the customer who’s searching”.8
Prominence is “how well-known a business is”. It draws on links to your website and how many reviews you have.8
The scores come from 47 local search experts who rated 187 factors for Whitespark.14 None of them has special access to Google’s algorithm.
Google says “The categories you select affect your local ranking on Google.”6 Choose “the fewest number of categories it takes to describe your overall core business”.4
On our own profile, the only notice was a banner: “Your business category was updated by Google.”23
The distance study is a 2021 law-firm marketing study across 50 large US cities, on a 225-point grid.16 A profile that ranks at your door and fades across town is behaving as designed.
07
Can reviews get your profile restricted on Google?
The wrong kind can. Paying for reviews, or asking only happy customers, can pause or remove the reviews you have.
- No incentives: no payment, discounts or free goods in return for a review.11
- No cherry-picking: asking only happy customers breaks Google’s policy.11
- The penalty: new reviews paused, old ones unpublished, a warning shown to customers.10
- The law too: the FTC’s 2024 rule bans buying or selling fake reviews.13
The detail
Google’s policy bans offering “payment, discounts, free goods and/or services” for reviews.11 It also bans trying to “selectively solicit positive reviews from customers”.
In 2025 Google put posting restrictions on more than 782,000 accounts.12 Owners are emailed before a restriction applies.10
The FTC rule covers AI-written fake reviews and suppressing negative ones through threats.13 The survey figures come from BrightLocal’s 2026 poll of 1,002 US consumers.15
The safe system is the simple one. Ask every customer, never only the happy ones, and offer nothing for it.

08
What I’d do
- I wouldn’t touch the profile until I knew which problem I had.
- Search the exact name in a private window, then read the profile manager.
- Suspended? Appeal once, with documents that match. Never open a second profile.
- Showing only near my door is distance. No setting moves the customer.
- Spend the effort where Google points: a specific category, true hours, every customer asked for a review.

Questions people ask next
How long does a new business take to show on Google Maps?
Google gives its own ranges. Verification reviews take up to 5 business days,2 edits up to 3 days, and new-business rankings up to a month.1 Those are Google’s figures, not a promise from anyone.
Can I pay Google to show higher on Google Maps?
Not in the local results. Google says: “There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.”8 Anyone selling a top-three spot is selling something Google says can’t be bought.
Should I put keywords in my business name?
Only if they are part of your real name. Experts rank name keywords third of all Maps factors,14 but Google says “Including unnecessary information in your business name isn’t permitted.”4 Breaches are what suspensions are for.
